ElevenLabs Review: Pricing, Features and Who It Suits

ElevenLabs website

ElevenLabs is an AI audio platform built around text to speech and voice cloning, and for voiceovers on shorts, podcasts and audiobooks it is one of the most complete options. The free plan lets you try it, but the features most creators want, such as a commercial licence and voice cloning, start on paid plans. This ElevenLabs review covers what the platform does, what each plan includes and where the limits are, based on the company’s own pricing and product pages.

What ElevenLabs is

The company describes its platform as serving enterprises, creators and developers, and splits it into three areas:

  • ElevenCreative: generates speech, video, music and sound effects, with an editor for podcasts, audiobooks and voiceovers.
  • ElevenAgents: builds and monitors conversational agents across voice, chat, email and WhatsApp.
  • ElevenAPI: APIs and SDKs for text to speech, speech to text and music.

If you make content, ElevenCreative is the part you will use. Agents and the API matter mainly to businesses and developers.

Key features for creators

Text to speech. You type or paste a script and pick a voice. The site lists several models, including Eleven v3, Eleven v4, Eleven Multilingual v2 and Eleven Flash (v2.5). Its changelog says Eleven v4 and v4 Turbo launched on 28 September 2026, with the Turbo version at about 100 ms median inference latency. Latency matters mostly for live agents; for a pre-recorded voiceover you care about how natural the result sounds.

A large voice library. ElevenLabs advertises 17,500+ voices. You can also create a voice from a text description (Voice Design).

Voice cloning. There are two kinds, and the difference is documented:

  • Instant Voice Cloning works from short samples, under two minutes, and clones cannot be shared in the Voice Library.
  • Professional Voice Cloning needs more training audio, aims for higher fidelity, uses a voice-captcha check to confirm the clone is made from your own voice, and requires a Creator plan or above.

Dubbing. The Starter plan and above include Dubbing Studio, which is useful if you want to publish the same video in other languages.

Music, sound effects and speech to text. The platform also generates music (with or without vocals), sound effects and ambient audio, and transcribes speech with speaker labels. Image and video generation is offered through third-party models, so what you get there depends on which models ElevenLabs currently hosts. Its changelog lists some retiring, for example Seedance 1.5 Pro on 11 November 2026.

ElevenLabs pricing

Prices below are as of November 2026, taken from the ElevenLabs pricing page. All products draw on one shared pool of monthly credits. Prices exclude taxes.

A few points the page makes that affect real use:

  • The free plan has no commercial licence. The page lists a commercial licence from Starter upwards. If you publish to a monetised channel, plan on a paid tier and check the current terms on the ElevenLabs site first.
  • Credits can roll over. On paid plans unused credits roll over for up to two months. They expire at the end of the cycle if you downgrade or cancel. Free plan credits do not roll over.
  • Small requests cost a minimum. The changelog notes that from 26 October 2026 text to speech and speech to text requests priced below one credit are charged one credit.

ElevenLabs does not publish a single “minutes per credit” figure on that page, so check how many credits your script uses with a short test before choosing a plan.

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • One platform for voice, dubbing, music and sound effects, so a short video can be voiced, translated and scored in one place.
  • A large voice library plus both quick and professional-grade cloning.
  • Credits roll over on paid plans, which helps if your output varies month to month.
  • Frequent updates: the changelog shows new models and features almost every week in September and October 2026.

Limitations

  • Free plan credits (10,000 a month) are for trying the tool, and the free tier excludes commercial use and cloning.
  • Professional cloning needs the Creator plan or higher, and a voice check.
  • Credit-based billing makes costs less predictable than a flat monthly fee. Pricing details also change; the changelog records several billing changes in October 2026 alone.
  • Some figures on the site are inconsistent: the home page says 90+ languages for speech and agents, while its text to speech API section says 29+. Check that your language is supported for the model you plan to use before you commit.

Who should use it

ElevenLabs suits:

  • Short-form video creators who need voiceovers in volume and want the commercial licence from Starter.
  • Podcasters and audiobook makers who want consistent narration or a cloned voice for corrections and intros.
  • Developers who need a text to speech or speech to text API.

It is less suited to anyone who only needs an occasional robot-style voice, since cheaper or free built-in options exist, and to teams that need a fixed monthly budget with no usage variation.

Cloning a voice raises consent and legal questions. Only clone your own voice or one you have clear written permission to use, and ask a lawyer if you are unsure about a commercial project.

Verdict

ElevenLabs is a strong pick for creators who need voiceovers, dubbing or cloned voices in one place. Start on the free plan to judge the voices, then move to Starter once you need a commercial licence, and to Creator if you need Professional Voice Cloning. Watch your credit use for the first month and compare it against the plan you chose.
